According to Kenyans News, the controversial oil tycoon, who controls businesses worth billions, was charged to court for physically assaulting his 66-year-old mother, Bambi Devani and causing bodily harm. This incident reportedly occurred on the night of February 28 at their home in Runda, Nairobi.
Unlike other African billionaires like Dangote, Raj doesn’t know how to stay out of trouble.
This is not the first time the tycoon, who owns the multi-billion Jade Petroleum Company, would get caught up with the law. In 2014, the oil tycoon was arraigned in court for firing a gun in a plaza in Nairobi, and endangering lives. The building, which belonged to him, had been taken over by the country’s National Bank. Enraged, the businessman forced his way into the building, armed with a Beretta Pistol. The case is still ongoing.
In court yesterday, Raj Devani who had gotten immigration to deport his Russian wife, denied the charges of assaulting his mother, and the State asked that Magistrate Stella Atambo remand the businessman in prison as there was a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear in court for the gun charges.
Also, another state counsel Diana Orango presented a warrant for Raj’s arrest for failing to appear in court to answer to charges of destroying a tourist chopper worth SH15 million.
“We are opposed to him being given bond as he has other warrants of arrest before Milimani and Kajiado courts,” the prosecutor said, and added that Raj is already a threat to his mother. He reportedly had sent her a threatening message.
“The accused person is the complainant’s son. It is not the first time he has assaulted her; he abuses her emotionally and she feels threatened,” the prosecutor added.
Raj Devani was remanded in jail for a day; the magistrate demanded that the warrants for Raj’s arrest be presented in court today, to enable her make a final decision on whether to release him on bail.
