Men of the Ogun state command of the Nigeria Police Force and their colleagues at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have allegedly abandoned two children at the Ijebu Ode general hospital after their mother died in a car crash on Sunday.
The siblings are between the ages of 8 months(female) and 2 years (male), and their mother who had multiple fractures from the accident reportedly died before she could give any useful information. Meanwhile they are being given care in the Iye Subomi Child Care Centre of the hospita.
The mother and some other passengers are said to have been involved in a head on collision with another vehicle while travelling from Ijebu-Ode to Ibadan in Oyo state.
Policemen and FRSC officials who visited the scene reportedly evacuated corpses and other injured victims but failed to see the children who were reportedly trapped by a stream near the accident scene.
A passerby who heard their cries rescued the siblings as well as another child, a 4-year-old, and took them to the Ijebu-Ode general hospital in company of some police officers who were alerted on the discovery. The 4-year-old whose mother survived the accident however passed on in hospital.
Nurses at the hospital on Wednesday told a Punch source that neither the policemen nor the FRSC officials had called again to check on the children.
A nurse, Tope Ashiru, stated that when the FRSC was contacted, it promised to send its officials but no one from the agency showed up.
