An overnight fire has razed a shopping mall in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
This came less than three months after a popular supermarket on Sapele road, Phil-Hallmark, was razed by fire.
The fire at the plaza which belonged to the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), has come barely three months after a popular supermarket on Sapele road, Phil-Hallmark, was gutted by a heavy inferno.
Punch reports that several shops along Etete road in GRA, Benin, were affected by the fire which began at about 9pm on Monday.
It is understood that over 86 shops were razed with valuables worth millions of Naira destroyed before the arrival of the State Fire Service.
The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Emeka Iheanacho, confirmed the incident, promising that the cause of the inferno will be ascertained.
“Yes, there was a fire incident at POWA shopping plaza. It was not at the zonal headquarters. Nobody could ascertain the cause of the fire, as of last night (Monday),” he said.
“Some alleged that it was some people stockpiled gas cylinders and, probably, it (inferno) could be as a result of the explosion of the gas.
“But those things are unconfirmed reports. It is this morning that the (police) command must have intensified investigation to know the cause of the fire incident. It is a great loss to the POWA.”
Some of the shop owners lamented the loss while the acting Chairperson, of the Police Officers Wives Association (Edo Command) Mrs. Ayba Elkanah, condoled with them.
“We will go round and just the level of damage before we can solicit the assistance of philanthropists and government,” she said.
“They (shop owners) should take heart. The important thing is this that no life was involved. God has a solution for everything.”
